چکیده

Ever since the co-existence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a starburst was observationally discovered, there has been a significant controversy over whether there is a physical connection between starbursts and AGNs. If yes, it is a subject of interest to reveal which one triggers another. Here we bring a unique insight onto the subject by identifying 840 galaxies with both a post-starburst signature (strong Balmer absorption lines) and an AGN (based on the emission line ratio). These poststarburst-AGNs account for the 4.2% of all the galaxies in a volume-limited sample. The presence of a post-starburst phase with an active AGN itself is of importance, suggesting that AGNs may outlive starbursts in the starburst-AGN connection. In addition, we have performed spatially resolved spectroscopy of three of our poststarbusrstAGN galaxies, obtaining some evidence that the post-starburst region is more extended, but sharply centred around the central AGN, confirming a spatial connection between the poststarburst and the AGN.

Towards a Complete Census of AGNs in Nearby Galaxies: A Large Population of Optically Unidentified AGNs

Using Spitzer-IRS spectroscopy, we investigate the ubiquity of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in a complete (≈ 94 percent), volume-limited sample of the most bolometrically-luminous galaxies (LIR, 8−1000 μm & (0.3–20) ×10 10 L⊙) to D < 15 Mpc. Our analyses are based on the detection of the high-excitation emission line [NeV]λ14.32 μm (97.1 eV) to unambiguously identify AGN activity. We find that ...

AGNs and Starbursts : What Is the Real Connection ?

It is now widely believed that the growth of massive black holes is closely linked to the formation of galaxies, but there have been few concrete constraints on the actual physical processes responsible for this coupling. Investigating the connection between AGN and starburst activity may offer some empirical guidance on this problem. I summarize previous observational searches for young stars ...

The Evolutionary Sequence of Post-Starburst Galaxies

There are multiple ways in which to select post-starburst galaxies in the literature. In this work, we present a study into how two well-used selection techniques have consequences on observable post-starburst galaxy parameters, such as colour, morphology and environment and how this affects interpretations of their role in the galaxy duty cycle. We identify a master sample of Hδ strong (EWHδ >...

Spatially-Resolved Medium Resolution Spectroscopy of an Interacting E+A (post-starburst) System with the Subaru telescope

We have performed a spatially-resolved medium resolution long-slit spectroscopy of a nearby E+A (post-starburst) galaxy system, SDSSJ161330.18+510335.5, with the FOCAS spectrograph mounted on the Subaru telescope. This E+A galaxy has an obvious companion galaxy 14kpc in front with the velocity difference of 61.8 km/s. Both galaxies have obviously disturbed morphology. Thus, this E+A system prov...

The Seyfert-starburst Connection in X-rays. I. the Data

We analyze X-ray spectra and images of a sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies that unambiguously contain starbursts, based on their optical and UV characteristics. Although all sample members contain active galactic nuclei (AGNs), supermassive black holes or other related processes at the galactic centers alone cannot account for the total X-ray emission in all instances. Eleven of the twelve observed ...
